Art In The City

Noche Blanca: Saturday, May 24
Billed as una velada de arte y cultura, Noche Blanca is a night in Merida when art galleries and museums open their doors until late into the night. Art exhibits are accompanied by music, food and parties, creating a very festive atmosphere.
Location: All over town in downtown Merida
Admission: Free

Exhibition: Winners of the 2013 Funds for the Visual Arts - April 15 – No end date listed
The winners of support offered by the Ayuntamiento de Merida present the results of their projects. The winners include Yoochel Kaaj, Cine Video Cultura, A.C., Igor Solís, Mina Bárcenas y Paloma Menéndez.
Location: Museum of the City of Merida (1st floor) and in the Galeria de Arte Municipal, Calle 65 x 56

SoHo Galleries Special Exhibition: Friday and Saturday.
The night before Noche Blanca, SoHo Galleries is having a Noche de Colores exhibition with D.F. artist Jorge Aguilar and sculptor Federico Rivero. Jorge will be painting on piece on canvas live in the gallery, and that painting will be auctioned off at 9:00 PM. The proceeds from the auction will go to help support Brazos Abiertos. Jorge Aguilar's work is bold with a modern Mexican flavor. Both nights will be open with food and wine.

Collective Exhibit
Galeria Eskalera will feature new exhibits for Noche Blanca, including a photography exhibit by William Frej about Enduring Cultures and sculpture by Abraham Illescas. The open starts at 8 PM, the exhibit continues even after the weekend.

Invitation: Opening of the Exhibition: Oaxaca en Nahualli: May 8 to 24
This exhibition is an amazing collection of prints from Oaxaca. They will be showing more than 400 pieces of art this month.

Valladolid: V Festival of San Bernadino de Siena
If you haven’t been to Valladolid in a while, this festival is a great excuse to go visit. The events are all so special and underscore why this festival is growing into one of the best in all of Yucatan.

119th Anniversary of the Fall of Jose Marti
Jose Marti was a Cuban revolutionary when Cuba was fighting for independence from Spain. In addition to being a national leader, he was also a poet and a writer, whose work continues to inspire Latin Americans to this day.

Nadia was an 11-year-old girl In the Taliban Afghanistan. To be able to survive, Nadia had to dress up as a boy. She did that over the next 11 years; until 4 years ago, when an NGO took her out of the country and she was established in Cataluña, Spain as a woman. Last summer, Nadia went back to her country for the first time and the cameras joined her.

Yucatan Symphony Orchestra: May/ June Schedule
Program 13: Opera: La Cenicienta (Cinderella), June 20, 22, 24, 26 & 28. Please note Time Change: All of these gala performances are at 8:00 PM. The last symphony of the Spring Season is always one of the best events in Merida for the year. For tonight’s performance, the Concert Director is Juan Carlos Lomonaco and the Scene Director is Horacio Almada. Rossini’s Cinderela, tonight, features: Gabriela Thierry, Oscar de la Torre, Josue Ceron, Sergio Meneses, Claudia Rodriguez, Irasema Terrazas, and Emilio Carsi. XXVII Marathon of the Marina 2014: June 8
This marathon has grown to be one of the largest in Yucatan. The prize pool this year is more than $500,000 pesos, and includes two compact cars, two motorcycles, and trips to the Riviera Maya. The marathon will be a total distance of 42.195 km and the half-marathon will be 21 km. Registration: May 5 to June 6.
Location: Begins at the Monumento a la Patria on Paseo de Montejo. Ends at the Malecon in Progreso.
Time: Marathon will begin at 5:00 AM
Registration: Register in IDEY offices, located in Gimnasio Polifuncional (CALLE 60 x 21 # 312 Col. Alcalá Martín): 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
