I was kind of hoping for a review of this place. Anyone have any useful information?

As far as I can tell, norteamericano (North American) technically INCLUDES Mexico. So, Richard, we need to be a bit more specific. I think it is pretty safe to blend in with the local population and refer to things as they do, using local landmarks.

I wonder if Richard thinks we should all stop drinking our organic Chiapas coffee and start drinking Coca Cola for breakfast since that what the locals do.

Richard, we appreciate your comment. But referring to the most memorable or easiest-to-identify feature of a place is a very Yucatecan thing to do. Most of the Yucatecans we know call it the Burger King Circle too... and even if they don't, they know what you're talking about when you say it. Conversely, the glorieta across from MacDonald's a little farther south is not called the MacDonald's circle...it's called the Monumento de la Bandera.

We're as anti-corporate as the next guy (more so!) but when it comes to directions, we choose the most well-known memorable way, because it's easier. It has nothing to do with being a gringo.

So call it what you want and we will too... but next time you give directions that involve "the Fountain glorieta" and someone doesn't know what you're talking about, if you clarify yourself by calling it the Burger King Circle, we won't tell anybody :-)

Living in Merida, I have consciously tried to avoid sounding too much like a norte americano. One of my pet peeves is the way we gringos reference things in terms of our former places of residence. For example, your directions frequently use the term "Burger King circle" rather than the local frame of reference "the Fountain Glorieta" or "the monument glorieta." I think we should try to avoid referencing the typical norte americano markers and use the local references. Thank you.
