This is our favorite restaurant in Progreso. We always do it the same way: a leisurely walk east along the beach from the malecon in Progreso, probably a little more than a kilometer or so. We leave the crowds behind and the ordinary fish and beer places and when we get to Elio al Mare (careful, it's a bit hidden behind palm trees and other beach vegetation) we sit on the sand and enjoy the view for a while. Then we go into the restaurant for a special treat. Both the food and the view are excellent, but one needs to know a few things. Prices range, for example, from a perfectly cooked fish fillet for less than $10 US to more than $30 US for a "special". The margaritas are very good and for the usual price in the Merida area. A 15% tip is added to the bill. Some people don't like that, but that's what we normally would pay anyway and some other restaurants here do the same (always check the restaurant bill to see if service is included). After lunch we relax a while on Elio's beachside lounge chairs then take a taxi back to the bus station and are soon home again in Merida. The restaurant decor is significantly nicer than most places in Progreso, but not elegant. For us this is one of the very best things to do on a sunny day in the Yucatan. Tip: call ahead to make sure Elio is open before you walk all that way: 999 935 0804
