How to Get There from the Centro: Due to the weird no left turns on Prolongacion, the following way is more ‘direct’, though you will pass it if you just go straight north on Paseo de Montejo. Instead, take Calle 60 north to Calle 21 (past the railroad tracks, past the Mega grocery store). Turn right on Calle 21 and continue east until your reach the signal at Prolong. Paseo de Montejo. Take a right onto Prolong. Paseo de Montejo and Ya’axtal Café will be on your right two blocks down. It is across from the Blockbuster on Prolong. Paseo de Montejo.

Notes:Café Ya’axtal is the answer to the question, "Where can you find healthy food without forgoing flavor in Merida?" This is the place where will you find delicious, fresh, healthy and creatively prepared breakfast and/or lunch. Each day, Jette Virdi, café menu creator, prepares healthy option for breakfasts, including choices with yogurt, granola, bagels, house-made shmers and organic greens. Her daily lunch menu usually offers an open-face sandwich, pasta or stir fry. She also has a daily salad, often using an incredibly yummy organic greens mix. All items are available to eat in or take out (para llevar). All food is prepared using organic and seasonal ingredients and the daily menu is based on the freshest food available. As the seating is limited, take out is a popular option. You can even call ahead to have the daily special ready for a later pick up time.
The Café is located inside the Ya’axtal Ecotienda. This is a small health food store that stocks an extensive variety of organic and gluten free products, such as Vegan Planet, Bob’s Red Mill, Nature’s Path and NorQuin, to name a few. Local organic vegetables are also for sale. Hard-to-find items like agave syrup, free range brown eggs, almond and rice milks, quinoa, Ezekiel breads, and organic cleaning and laundry soaps are also for sale. Friday is pick up day for the cafes house-made breads and nut-butters. It is suggested that you order on Wednesday for pick up on Friday. Tuesday is organic vegetable pick-up day. Call the store for more details regarding ordering bread, nut-butters, organic vegetables, free range chicken and organic raised beef.

I've eaten here several times and it's always been fresh, healthy and really good. At last…a healthy option that's worth it!
