Protección de Perros y Gatos
It's been a long time coming, but Protección de Perros y Gatos, a.c. has finally opened its doors to serve the people of the Municipality of Progreso with quality vet care for everyone, including street dogs and families who cannot afford vet care for their pets.
The Association recently received the materials promised in June from the City to sterilize 100 animals, thus, they began the first major campaign at the clinic.
Obviously, it will be impossible to neuter 100 street dogs in a single weekend as targeting the callejeros will take detailed planning, coordination and a small army of volunteers. Fortunately, and thanks to Protección de Perros y Gatos' amazing and dedicated Vigilante, Manuela Gómez, and her team, it has been possible to enlist the co-operation of two like-minded groups, Ciudadanos Pro Mascota (Citizens for Pets) and Paws on the Beach. These groups are joined by two additional local vets who have committed several hours a week to the campaign until the materials are all gone. The use of a large property has also been donated for pre and post-surgical care. The staff and volunteers at Protección de Perros y Gatos are confident they can sterilize 10-15 animals a week over the next 7-10 weeks.
Please Note: Protección de Perros y Gatos has suspended their monthly social meetings for the time being in order to focus on the work at hand but they hope to resume these gatherings right after the New Year. In the meantime, your thoughts and comments are always welcome via e-mail and your donations even more so now that they are finally doing what they set out to do so many years ago. Protección de Perros y Gatos estimates the average cost of materials to sterilize an animal at $400 pesos (anesthesia and antibiotics are expensive). Therefore your $32 USD donation will neuter one dog or cat and prevent hundreds more from ever being born into lives of misery and suffering.

My humble apologies, everyone. I had NO idea that this was so controversial. I would like people to know about the organization, but have removed the offending material. I was given this article and published it, trusting the person who had given it to me had done the fact checking. In my own defense, I was distracted by my OWN rescue dog who finally died four days ago of a battle with leukemia. I wasn't paying as close attention as I usually do, and for that I apologize.

Thank you Dan for your reply to this article, you have said everything that I would like to say. There are plenty of groups that through generous donations are able to address the massive problem of animal health and reproduction. The beach community is AMAZING at joining together to tackle these issues and ANY animal in distress is worthy of being treated.

Daniel, thank you for your thoughtful and insightful comment. Please don't shame us :-( We are happy to promote... or at least inform you about.... anyone who is trying to help, no matter how small their efforts. However, I do agree with you that perhaps some of the wording was inappropriate. I appreciate very much that you took the time to point out how AFAD and others are addressing problems, etc. Everything you said. Honestly, this article came to us pretty much already written and we did not think about it thoroughly enough. We have plenty of web real estate... so let's do more to tell our readers about the great work that EVERYONE is doing to address these problems. Thank you again!!

Interesting. Since October 26th I am no longer "vigilante" of this association. CIUDADANOS PROMASCOTAS (CPM) is independent of the association as well as our labor.
I respect the hard and generous work of all associations and groups in Progreso. I do not agree with comments that attack the generous work of those who seriously are working for the street dogs. Abrazos to all. I BELONG TO CIUDADANOS PROMASCOTAS (CPM) in Progreso.

I am sorry. I need to take issue with this article.
I work with A.F.A.D. Progreso, A.F.A.D. (Merida) and Planned Pethood as a volunteer.
Other groups do not have "similar campaigns". Other groups have campaigns that far exceed this group's accomplishments, goals, vision and more. Campaigns that have over the last 6 years sterilized companion animals, for free, by the thousands.
I take umbrage with two statements in particular that I feel are specifically aimed at more effective groups.
This statement:
"they take all comers, including many who can well afford to pay for the surgery"
I feel this targets the campaigns that are put together by Planned Pethood in conjunction with other support groups (A.F.A.D. foremost among those).
In truth, yes, almost anyone can show up at these clinics and have their pet sterilized. How is this a bad thing? We don't ask people to prove they are poor. People who are poor receive humiliation in their daily life. They don't need more humiliation from us, especially when they are trying to do the right thing.
When someone who clearly has means arrives at either the large clinics in January or one of the many single day clinics that Planned Pethood heads up through out the year, we as volunteers ask them to donate. Honestly, it happens so rarely, but when it does a simple explanation along the lines of; "We are happy that you care enough about your pet to have them sterilized. If you could donate to off set the cost so that someone less fortunate will not miss the same opportunity..." These "people who can well afford to pay" have, without exception, always donated.
My second issue is with this statement:
"None of these other groups is specifically addressing the street dog problem"
That is an outright falsehood. The people at No Mas Perritos focus entirely on street dogs. In fact the initiative described in your article pretty much mirrors what they have been doing for the last two years. Those amazing people have sterilized 305 street dogs. All through money raised privately.
Groups who help alleviate the over population problem are more than welcome on the scene. Groups like:
A.F.A.D. Progreso - in addition to their day to day work, support for major clinics and funded/organized one day clinics - 3 in Chicxulub Puerto, 2 in Progreso, 2 in Flamboyanes and will be supporting this Sunday's mini clinic in Chelem.
PAAR in Telchac Puerto - I don't know exactly what their numbers are but I'll guess at 6 one day mini clinics in the last two years. That is a conservative guess I am sure it is more. All the same - They do good things. There is no denying that
No Mas Perritos in Chelem/Cuburna - As already stated 305 animals sterilized in the last two years.
What has Perros Y Gatos done? Raising money for 10 plus years and only now getting around to their first sterilization campaign.... The best thing I can say about them is they are ineffective.
Shame on Yucatan Living for promoting them. There are so many other groups actually accomplishing things for the betterment of animals in the Yucatan (and you know this because you champion their efforts!). Why have you wasted your web real estate on these people?

Shame on you YL for printing this. Did you even read it and fact check read this misinformation? The money for the materials for 100 animals to be sterilized was given to them because of Javier Cuouh through Maura Lezama of AFAD Progreso. All the animals sterilized over the past 5 years have been for the benefit of those that cannot afford. What kind of game are they and you playing for printing this?
At least Mexico Amigos had the decency to take this down.
This article has inflammed several animal groups that work so hard to do what they have done for so many years including the Vet that had to work on these animals.
This has been forwarded to the Administrators of the City of Progreso and there will be a very concious effort to make sure that under these circumstances, that P & G will NOT be getting any more materials.

Interesante. Desde el 26 de octubre renucie a ser vigilante de esta asociacion. CIUDADANOS PROMASCOTAS (CPM) es independiente de esta asociacion,asi como su labor.
Respeto el trabajo arduo y generoso de todas las asociaciones y grupos en progreso. No comulgo con pensamientos que atacan la labor generosa de quienes con seriedad trabajamos por los callejeros. Un abrazo a todos. PERTENEZCO A CIUDADANOS PROMASCOTAS(CPM).
