Grito de Independencia: Mexican Independence Day
On the night of September 15, Mexicans around the world will gather to proclaim “Viva Mexico!” at midnight, and then to celebrate Mexican Independence on September 16. If you are in Merida, this is a must attend event. There will be similar celebrations in towns and villages throughout the state and, actually, around the world.
Location: Palacio de Gobierno in every town in Mexico. In Merida, on the Plaza Grande, with an outdoor musical concert before, starting at 9 PM.

Movies: Two Documentaries about Salvador Dali
First: Dali, Master of Dreams. (Spain 2004). Biography by Manuel Palacios. This is a passionate and personal documentary piece on this key figure in modern art.
Second: Dimension Dali. (Spain 2004). Documentary by Joan Ubeda, Susi Marques and Eli Pons. Salvador Dali was science obsessed and throughout his life, kept himself informed about the most important discoveries of his time and cultivated the friendship of prestigious researchers. Both films are probably in Spanish.

This video was filmed over three days in Tecoh, Yucatan. It turns the process of making corn tortillas into a rhythmic and harmonious dance. This is a video to see... and one you probably won't see anywhere else!

Mexican Cinema: Bad Habits
(Mexico 2007). Director: Simon Bross. Starring Elena de Haro, Ximena Ayala, Denys Flores, Marco Trevino, Marta Aura and Hector Ortega. Matilde, who has left medicine to become a novice at a monastery, engages in a secret fast, intended to stop a flood at the same time that her chubby cousin is preparing for her first communion. The mother of the cousin is ashamed of her daughter’s weight and makes it almost impossible for her to lose weight. Meanwhile, the Pope discovers his own love of good food.

This performance is based on a 13th century poem that describes Judgment Day, when the last trumpet will blow and all souls are called before God. On this day, they will go to Heaven or Hell. The performance is by the Caballo Azul Dance Company.

Mexican Cinema: The Last Heroes of the Peninsula
(Mexico 2004). Director: Jose Manuel Craviotto. Starring: Jesus Colain Rivero, Miguel Canto, Guty Espadas, Juan Herrera, Freddie Castillo and Guadalupe Madera. This is the first documentary produced entirely by UNAM through the program of Operas Primas del Centro Universitario de Estudios Cinematograficos (CUEC). Directed by Jose Manuel Cravioto, this documentary tells the glorious story of boxing in Yucatan between 1970 and 1980. Five world champions came together in Yucatan during that time. Their former coach, Jesus Cholain Rivero, narrates the documentary, which includes the voices of other sports professionals. Most likely in Spanish.

This is the absolute “Must See” event of the week. Performances by the wonderful Orquesta Tipica Yucalpeten, Imelda Miller, Maria Medina, and legendary Sergio Esquivel. This kicks off the Fall Festival of the Arts in Merida.

Progreso: Free Rabies Vaccination Clinic: Sept. 22 – Oct. 2
Starting today, pet rabies vaccines provided by the Directorate for Civil Protection and Ecology of the City of Progreso, in coordination with the Health Center (Centro de Salud). There will be enough vaccine to take care of 3,000 animals. If you don't have animals, encourage your neighbors to bring theirs!

Second Annual White City Ball - Saturday, October 18
This is the annual AANY fundraiser. The White City Ball promises to be the most glamorous event of the fall season. Trova music will greet you and a live band will keep you dancing. The price includes botanas from some of the best restaurants and caterers in Merida including Trattoria La Pasta, Bistro Cultural, Merida Home Cooking to Go, V’s Good Eats, and more. Sweets from Café Crème and Yury’s Decadent Brownies will end the night on a sweet note. There will be a cash bar and a silent auction, including pieces by AANY artists.

This year’s exciting show represents over 70 masters of the finest in Yucatecan art and handcrafted treasures.

Miraculous Medal Race - November 23
This running event is open to the general public and is being held as a benefit for the Chelem Chapel. The course is approximately 14 miles long. Prizes to be announced. Categories include: free, master, submaster, male and female veterans, and veterans plus wheel chair. There will also be additional events, such as 5K hikes, walks. This event is under the direction of the Institute of Sport (IDEY).

Bird-a-thon Xocch’ich: November 21 through 23
The biggest birdwatching competition on the Yucatan Peninsula. More Information as it becomes available. Mark your calendars!

Benefit: The Oasis Red Ribbon Charity Ball - Nov. 29, 2014
This lavish event will open the festive season on the terrace of one of Merida’s most spectacular homes. The event will be a be a fundraiser for Oasis San Juan de Dios AC, a shelter for people affected by HIV/AIDS who have no resources and no family to care for them. Live music and dancing will follow the scrumptious dessert bar. A raffle and live auction will add to the merry-making.

Admission: $1,000 pesos per person. Limit 150 people. A buffet dinner and a full open bar (all drinks are included in the ticket price).
