Merida Events: Tunich Fair Still
This Week... starting July 28, 2014
Feria Tunich 2014: Friday, July 25 through Sunday, August 3
Have you ever heard of a fair that got hammered by torrential rain, but 83,000 visitors came anyway? That was the Feria Tunich in 2013. This year, just in case, they have installed the ways and means to direct any extra water away and huge numbers of people are expected to be in tiny Dzitya for their not-to-be-missed fair. Special invited guests will be artisans from Corregidora, Queretero, with additional participants expected from Michoacán, Jalisco, Guanajuato and Puebla. As time for the fair draws near, we will provide a link to online maps and schedules of when and where there will be free busses and vans from the city out to this amazing fair. In the meantime, read Yucatan Living’s own Stones of Dzitya to get an idea of what Dzitya is about.
In The City
When the heat rises, in July and August, kids are out of school; but Merida seems strangely deserted. “Oh – they’re all at the beach,” some say; but we know better. When the temperature rises in Merida, Merida goes to the movies. There are an amazing number of movie theaters in this city and many film series are supported by either the state, the city, or private organizations that offer special presentations either free or at very little cost. We just finished an Alfred Hitchcock series and are well into a series of Japanese monster movies from the 1960s. So, if you are in Merida and prefer not to fight the crowds at the beach, now is the time to catch up on your museum visits and then its off to an air conditioned movie... or two.
