This Week... starting August 04, 2014

In The City

Traditional Fiesta in San Sebastian in Merida

Wilberto Canton Theater Festival: August 2 – 16 This week and next, there will be more theater performances in Merida than anyone can imagine. The festival is to showcase the marvelous dramatic talent produced in this state, along with its exceptionally talented directors. However, the festival is also in honor of Wilberto Canton, who was born in Merida (1923) and died in Mexico City (1979). The life between those years was amazing. Wilberto Canton studied law at UNAM and literature in Chile and Paris. Ultimately, he chaired the Departments of Theater Arts and Literature at the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes and served as president of the Drama Critics Guild in the 1950s. He was a playwriter, a poet, a teacher, and even a cultural ambassador for Mexico to Belgium (1972) and UNESCO (1974). This national recognition of one of Merida’s own favorite sons is deeply appreciated and we know everyone will find at least a few performances to see before the 16th. All performances are in Spanish. Please don’t let this stop you from attending these events. Great theater is a language of its own. Check the events here!

I'm surprised there is no mention of the huge fiesta going on at San Sebastian every night for the next couple of weeks. Lots of music, food and crazy fireworks most nights. It's one of my favorite Merida event.
