VEL Lecture Series: History of Mexican Independence Day
Paula Álvarez graduated as an archaeologist from UADY University. She has Master and Doctor degrees from the London University. Paula worked for 26 years doing archaeological investigations in several Mayan Sites, especially in Calakmul. She retired 2 years ago and lives in Valladolid where she teaches Sociology to upper grades at the Modelo University.

Movie: Cuentos de hadas para dormir cocodrilos (Bedtime Fairy Tales for Crocodiles)
(Mexico 2002) Language: Spanish. Director: Ignacio Ortiz. Starring Arturo Rios, Luisa Huertas, Ana Graham, Dagoberto Gama and Mayra Serbulo. A man travels back to the house of his father, grandfather and on backward. He is in search of salvation from a family curse for himself and his son. The movie mixes the personal life of the ancestors of this man with historical moments for México, such as The Reform War, the Mexican Revolution, etc.

Movie: Little Dieter Needs to Fly
(Germany 1997) German-American Dieter Dengler discusses his service as an American naval pilot in the Vietnam War. Dengler also revisits the sites of his capture and eventual escape from the hands of the Vietcong, recreating many events for the camera. In German with Spanish subtitles.

Movie 1: Medusa
(United States 2009). Writer/Director: Christopher Cassel. Documentary Narrator: Stan Bernard. Find out this evil Gorgon's real world connection to human corpses, and learn what clues the night sky holds about the origins of the tale of Medusa.

Merida Magic: Wine Tasting at MEL
Tonight begins the new season of Merida Magic at the Merida English Library. Three wonderful wines will be presented by Naomi Murphy, along with excellent Indian dishes for your enjoyment, all at a beautiful Merida home in the centro.

Chelem Christmas Dreams September Bingo Raffle Extravaganza September 12
It's back to Bingo Time! Come hang out with the Chelem Elves at their September Bingo/Raffle Extravaganza! As usual, half the bingo money goes to the toy drive fund and half goes to the lucky winners. They’ve already got some great raffle prizes in their backpack and they're working on more. Prizes so far include a one week stay at Casa de Coco in Mahahual, stays at hotels in San Cristobal and Puerto Aventuras, gift certificates at Robert Abuda Salon, restaurants, dog grooming and more. Admission: They let you decide how many cards and how many games you want to play. Cards for regular bingo will be 25 pesos each, and the cards for the blackout round will be 75 pesos each. Also, you can participate in the raffles even if you are not in the Yucatan by going to our donation page . For every $10.00 donation, they'll throw 5 raffle tickets into the raffle of your choice.

This video was filmed over three days in Tecoh, Yucatan. It turns the process of making corn tortillas into a rhythmic and harmonious dance. This is a video to see... and one you probably won't see anywhere else!

Mexican Film: Los Albaniles
(Mexico 1976). Director: Jorge Fons. Starrig: Ignacio Lopez Tarso, Jaime Fernandez, Jose Alonso, Salvador Sanchez, Jose Carlos Ruiz and Katy Jurado. This classic Mexican movie shows us the lifestyle of the Mexican migrant construction workers in the middle 70s. We see the corruption, the robberies, infidelity, envy and the poor treatment that workers received from overseers. There is a murder that goes unresolved and plenty of bad language. Yet, with all of that, this is still one of the best movies of its kind that has ever been made. Well worth seeing.

Weekly Language Exchange
Every Friday in Hotel Campestre there is a language exchange. The comfortable setting is peaceful, on the terrace, with great coffee. This Friday, they will have a special movie night. Symphony Orchestra of Yucatan: Program 2
Juan Carlos Lomonaco Principal Conductor, Manuel Escalante piano.
In this program OSY presents the program from their first recording. The program interprets each of the recorded works of the three most important composers of Mexico nationalism: Chavez, Revueltas and Moncayo, and the first orchestral recording Metro Chabacano Javier Alvarez as well as a unique concert by Ricardo Castro on the Piano. Congratulations to our orchestra for their 1st recording! The Program will be Suite “The Night of the Mayas” of Silvestre Revueltas, Metro Chabacano by Javier Alvarez; Symphony No. 2 “India” of Carlos Chavez and Huapango by José Pablo Moncayo. Mexican Cinema: “De Panzazo”
(Mexico 2012). Director: Jan Carlos Rulfo and Carlos Loret de Mola. This is a documentary presenting the current education system in Mexico, and its importance to the future of Mexico. It includes research findings, as well as interviews with parents and students. The documentary is intended as a call to all members of Mexican society to work for a better Mexico.

Second Annual White City Ball - Saturday, October 18
This is the annual AANY fundraiser. The White City Ball promises to be the most glamorous event of the fall season. Trova music will greet you and a live band will keep you dancing. The price includes botanas from some of the best restaurants and caterers in Merida including Trattoria La Pasta, Bistro Cultural, Merida Home Cooking to Go, V’s Good Eats, and more. Sweets from Café Crème and Yury’s Decadent Brownies will end the night on a sweet note. There will be a cash bar and a silent auction, including pieces by AANY artists.

Miraculous Medal Race - November 23
This running event is open to the general public and is being held as a benefit for the Chelem Chapel. The course is approximately 14 miles long. Prizes to be announced. Categories include: free, master, submaster, male and female veterans, and veterans plus wheel chair. There will also be additional events, such as 5K hikes, walks. This event is under the direction of the Institute of Sport (IDEY).

The biggest birdwatching competition on the Yucatan Peninsula. More Information as it becomes available. Mark your calendars!

Benefit: The Oasis Red Ribbon Charity Ball - Nov. 29, 2014
This lavish event will open the festive season on the terrace of one of Merida’s most spectacular homes. The event will be a be a fundraiser for Oasis San Juan de Dios AC, a shelter for people affected by HIV/AIDS who have no resources and no family to care for them. Live music and dancing will follow the scrumptious dessert bar. A raffle and live auction will add to the merry-making.

Admission: $1,000 pesos per person. Limit 150 people. A buffet dinner and a full open bar (all drinks are included in the ticket price).
