Operaciones Consulares - Viernes 11 de febrero de 2011
El viernes 11 de febrero de 2011, el Consulado en Mérida y las Agencias Consulares en Cancún y Playa del Carmen estarán cerrados al público. La Agencia de Cozumel estará abierta.
No se ofrecerán servicios de rutina en nuestras oficinas de Mérida, Cancún y Playa del Carmen en esta fecha. En caso de emergencias extremas que involucren a ciudadanos estadounidenses, puede llamar al número principal del Consulado en Mérida (ver más abajo) y será comunicado con un miembro del personal para recibir asistencia.
Reanudaremos las operaciones normales el lunes 14 de febrero de 2011.

Anime a sus amigos, familiares, vecinos y otros ciudadanos estadounidenses que conozca a registrarse. Fuera de horario, para emergencias que involucren a ciudadanos estadounidenses, llame al número principal del Consulado y siga las instrucciones para comunicarse con el oficial de guardia en Mérida.

we came down that highway in January and returned on it in March. We had no problems at all anywhere on the highway. I think the media gets just a little too worked up over fear mongering... the only problem on that road were the potholes. Happy driving

Actually, we traveled from Merida to California through Matamoros (next to Brownsville) at the end of March 2011. You can read about it here: http://www.yucatanliving.com/?p=4688. We understand that people have disappeared in that area, but they have all been Mexicans or Central Americans trying to make it into the United States. Yes, they are preyed upon by the gangs and drug cartels apparently. But if Americans or Canadians had disappeared that way, don't you think you would have heard about it? As far as we could tell, as long as you travel during the day, obey the law and mind your own business, you'll be fine. At least that is what we figured for ourselves and our drive was uneventful. However, that is just our personal experience... your experience might be different.

Could somebody let me know if they have traved from Brownsville to Merida in the last 2 weeks or so. I was told it has become very dangerous and not to travel by car. I have rented a home for a few years and was thunderstruck by the info that I was given by the American Consulate the Border Patrol and the Border Guards. I was told that the violence was not just on Americans but anyone at anytime. The main problem seems to be the highway gangs that are disguised as police. I was tolds that 100's of people have just vanished from this route in the past month (May 2011). I appreciate any info.

Good to have info...but can you register with the Consulate BY
E-MAIL ? Or do you have to go tothe Consulate in person?
We live in Vallaodlid and wouldlike to register - but I hate to have to make a speical trip to Merida (200 miles round trip) just to register.
If we can register by e-mail - I hope Yucatan Living will write an article telling us how to do it.
