Merida Emergency Numbers

Merida Emergency Numbers

18 July 2017 Daily Life 24

Awhile ago, friends of ours had a medical emergency in the middle of the night and didn't know who to call. We ourselves have needed to report something unusual on the street (in our case, an alarm system that refused to shut down) and didn't know how to contact the police. The number in our Paginas Amarillos (Yellow Pages) wasn't correct. And frankly, even when we are not rushed or in a panic, we find the Paginas Amarillos puzzling at best. When you are hurt or in trouble or just plain annoyed, but you don't know the language, information you may need is a lot harder to find.

Yucatan Living has made up an infographic for your reference. You can download it HERE. The download is free, just like the website. Keep it handy in case of an emergency. Keep one in your book or in your car or on your refrigerator. And if you can't find one when you need one, come to the website and we'll keep the numbers here for you too:

Who is a good doctor to go to when you have, um, stomach issues? Is there anyone near the Centro?

  • Working Gringos 7 years ago

Ginny, you can pick up a copy of the Guide to Yucatan Living which has a list of emergency numbers for the beach area. If you want to take a look at it, this article has a link to a PDF too!

Does anyone know if there is an equivalent list of emergency numbers available for the Chelem/Chuburna area? We are coming down for our first extended stay and my husband has Diabetes. I'd just like to know who to call locally if I really need to. Thanks :)

Hi, I'd like to add to the Emergency Numbers.

    Radiografias en su Domicilio (At Home X-rays): (999) 943-3036 or (999) 235-6730

We have a Portable X-Ray Service at very low cost. It's safe and has excellent quality. English spoken. We will go to the beach and hotels, too.

Thanks a lot for your helpful information and thanks a lot for the emergency numbers. It's so great to have them when needed!

It's "zipizapE", and it just means "Noisy fight".

Doesn't have to be a crowd, can be between 2 people.

It's an onomatopoeia that comes from the alleged "zip" and "zap" sounds in a fight.

I think the food recall is dealing with canned food only. Might want to check that out before total panic sets in.

According to the increasingly-amazing Beatriz, a zipizapi is a crowd activity that gets out of control. So yes, a riot in front of the government palace would be termed a zipizapi if it was energetic and needed to be put down. And a fight breaking out in a crowd at Carnaval that spread and got out of control would also be a zipizapi. Great word!!

Today at work, everyone was comparing lists of pet food, insuring their own was OK. What a panic this has brought on!

Incidentally, maybe fitting in a story about Emergency Numbers: What is a zipizapi? I saw it in a Diario article about the protest against Bush in the Zocalo. Is that a slang word for riot?

I think the violent attack on the government palace was the worst thing seen since the big bus relocation protests a couple years back. Was that a "zipizapi"?

Is o66 like 911 in the USA? Or, is there some differences when calling 066? You didn't mention IMSS in your list of Hospitals. lol. Of course my wife, "Working Yucateca", had to get me on in order to get care at IMSS. I've been treated at T-1, Juarez, and at the Chuburna Clinic. CMA is for the rico gringo touristas. A doctor there took advantage of me and cost me alot of money for care there. Thank God I married Ariadna and was able to get free medical care under the IMSS system.

We'd avoid Eukanuba, as it is one of the brands involved in a massive pet food recall.

See this link for a press release and the list of affected brands:
